South Saskatchewan River
What about my beach?
I was drawn to the river from a very young age. We grew up with little money. Vacations were a rarity and often involved visits to relatives instead of fascinating scenery and faraway places we could only dream of. Not a vacation as most people think of them today. We did however on rare occasion have the opportunity to go on a river outing and adventure with aunts, uncles and cousins a few kilometers from home. I recall we had to drive down what seemed like a mountain to get there and conversely climb a mountain to get out (things seemed so much larger when you were a kid). We were always scared to death, assuming the brakes were going to fail and we were going to slide out of control into the river on the way in and assumed the car wouldn’t have enough power to get us out or it might stall (dad loved to keep those rpm’s as low as they could go) and surely we were going to zoom backwards at full speed into the water. Of course, those things never happened and when we got to the water’s edge, we anxiously gathered at the trunk of my uncle’s car waiting for him to unload the case of pop he had brought from the vending machine at his automotive dealership. The adults gathered a distance away in a group of trees and worked on getting a fire going and visiting. For us it was freedom and fun, running, exploring, digging in the sand, playing in the water. It was the most fun childhood memory for me and so began my beach journey.
When I think of the beach I think of California, summer, sun, sand, blue crystal clear water, hot long stress free days, swimming in cool waters, sunrises, sunsets, palm trees, campfires, sandbars, boats, canoes, kayaks, surfboards, beach towels, bathing suits, cool sunglasses, tans, the smell of coffee sunscreen from Hawaii, the sounds of singing and acoustic guitar echoing across the water, volleyball, water adventures, waves, reflections, all day clear blue skies, nature, quiet, fun, to name just a few. In short, I think of all things that are good. So, when I was beginning the initial building of my website which was originally planned in my head as a place to feature my river photography only, I suddenly realized that there was so much more to show and tell. I have so many interests and it didn’t make sense to have a website for each. Then it occurred to me that the things that I like most are really my beach. In other words, the beach for me means all things that are good. I mean, have you ever heard anyone say they had a bad day at the beach? I think not!
My beach will always be under construction since my restless mind never lets me alone and my interests seem to grow by the day. So be sure to visit my beach often to see what my crazy mind has been up to in addition to my new beach (river) photos.
Hopefully you enjoy and feel inspired to find what your beach is for you. Feel free to leave comments and suggestions either in my blog or by email. Thanks for visiting!!!
